Broadfield Slopes Community Excavation.

The Broadfield Park Slopes Excavation, led by Elder Archaeology, CIC, built on the success of Big Dig Rochdale 2.0 to explore the long history of Broadfield Slopes, a site central to Rochdale’s medieval settlement and later industrial development.

The excavation combined professional archaeology with extensive community engagement and education. Elder Archaeology managed the programme, mentoring trainees, coordinating volunteers, and ensuring all participants gained practical heritage skills.

Trainees, volunteers, and schoolchildren actively participated in the excavation, recording, and interpretation of the site. The project also integrated workshops and educational sessions, creating opportunities for participants to engage with Rochdale’s history while developing archaeological skills. Broadfield Park Slopes exemplified Elder Archaeology’s community-first approach, combining professional research with meaningful public involvement to preserve, interpret, and celebrate the town’s heritage.
