Land of Lead and Silver

In September, Elder Archaeology, CIC began work on the Land of Lead and Silver project for the North Pennines National Landscape, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England.

The project started with hands-on workshops at Nenthead Mines, where participants learned photogrammetry and drone surveying to create 3D models and aerial imagery of historic lead mining sites. These sessions were designed and delivered by Colin Elder (Project Manager) and Jenny Addis (Project Lead) from Elder Archaeology. They combined practical skills training with exploration of the historic landscape.

Building on this, Elder Archaeology led a three-week community archaeology survey, engaging volunteers in detailed recording and mapping of a local mining site, and helping the local community connect with their heritage. A GIS workshop also introduced participants to QGIS ahead of the project’s first survey season.

Younger audiences have been included through the Young Archaeologists’ Club North Pennines, gaining hands-on experience and insight into local history.

Looking ahead, Elder Archaeology will oversee test-pitting and further survey work, ensuring the project continues to blend professional archaeological methods with meaningful community engagement.
