Big Dig 2.0
The Big Dig Rochdale 2.0 explored the rich history of Broadfield Slopes, a site central to Rochdale’s medieval settlement and later industrial development. The project combined professional archaeology with community engagement, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, GMAAS, and the Slopes Dig Team.
Five trainees completed a 10-week intensive training programme and were offered paid roles to lead the excavation, alongside additional volunteers. Nearly 1,000 people, including over 150 schoolchildren, participated in the three-week dig. Colin from Elder archaeology also mentored the Heritage Management Apprentice, Jordan Perris, hired by Rochdale Development Agency for this project.
Elder Archaeology, CIC played a pivotal role in the project, designing and delivering the trainee programme, mentoring participants, and coordinating volunteer and community involvement. Our expertise ensured the excavation was both professionally rigorous and highly inclusive, providing participants with practical skills in field archaeology, artefact processing, and heritage interpretation, while fostering meaningful engagement between the community and Rochdale’s historic environment.
